Quality Over Quantity

In this blog post, I would like to talk about how some video game series tend to ruin their own games by over complicating their game mechanics. The Call of Duty franchise is a perfect example of this. My first COD games was Call of Duty 4 which was an extremely simple game. You simple picked your favourite gun load-out and off you went, competing against other online. The COD franchise went downhill when they developed Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Both games introduced new game types which were completely different from previous game modes. Sure, its great that the franchise was looking to bring new content to its players, however, I found the added content to be extremely linear and not well thought out.

Personally, I think this is because both Ghosts and MW3 were developed mainly by Infinity Ward, a game development company. Most Call of Duty titled developed by Infinity Ward have been relatively linear and  uninteresting. This spans across the entirety of the game from campaign to multiplayer. There never seemed to be much depth to the quality of content. Overall, I think Infinity Ward suffers when they develop games for the COD franchise because they simply throw in filler content.

In comparison, the COD series of Black Ops was one of the most successful branches in COD history. I believe this is because the Black Ops titles were developed by Treyarch, another game development company. Unlike Infinity Ward, Treyarch seems to put an emphasis on quality opposed to quantity. Other games developed by Treyarch such as Call of Duty: World at War, had amazing campaigns to play through and actually engaged players in the content. Although most of the content was based around simple mechanics, the game felt very diverse. Every game mode felt like it served a purpose.

With the release of Black Ops 3, Treyarch has once again received praise. What is most interesting about Black Ops 3 is that it is very complex. I would say Black Ops 3 is one of the most complex COD games to date. However, despite being complex, the mechanics in the game actually felt like they served a purpose and weren’t just there to act as filler for the game. Additionally, Treyarch has a much better relationship with its fans. Treyarch is most famous for their Zombies game mode in their COD games. One Zombies map called Der Riese, is one of Treyarch’s most popular maps. It was released with Call of Duty: World at War in 2008. Knowing that Der Riese was a fan favourite, Treyarch updated the map and has made it available for players in Black Ops 3.

Having played the Der Riese map myself, I can say that I felt very nostalgic. I remembered all the good times I had playing the game back in 2008 and as a result I haven’t been able to stop playing! I was amazed when I realized the original Easter Eggs (hidden secrets in the game) were still present and even updated. They also included the original 4 Zombie characters who were in World at War. In addition to this, they also updated the story line for the map. This just goes to show how dedicated Treyarch is to their fans.
